This second volume continues Zigliara’s structured philosophical manual, extending the foundations of logic and ontology into the study of the natural world, the human soul, and rational reflection on God. It follows the Thomistic framework of Thomas Aquinas, presenting philosophy as an ordered progression from material reality to immaterial principles.
The first section, cosmology, examines the physical universe and its fundamental principles. Zigliara treats matter, form, motion, causality, and the structure of bodies, presenting nature as an intelligible order governed by stable metaphysical laws.
The second section, psychology, studies the human soul as the substantial form of the body. It analyzes the faculties of intellect, will, and sense cognition, along with the operations of knowledge, appetite, and volition. The soul is presented as immaterial in its higher operations and ordered toward truth and goodness.
The final section, natural theology, considers what human reason can know about God apart from revelation. Zigliara addresses God’s existence, attributes, and relation to the world, emphasizing divine simplicity, causality, and providence.
Throughout the volume, Zigliara maintains a clear pedagogical style, aiming to present philosophy as a unified ascent from the physical order to metaphysical and theological principles, suitable for academic instruction within the Thomistic tradition.
